Internship abroad

At Humak, you can complete the internship required for your degree abroad. On this page, you will find information about internship opportunities, the application process, and practical arrangements.

Interested in internship abroad?

Completing an internship abroad is a great opportunity to gain international experience, improve your language skills, and deepen your professional expertise through hands-on work. An international internship can enhance your employability, boost your self-confidence, and help you clarify your career goals.

If you meet the Erasmus+ grant criteria and complete a compulsory internship abroad as part of your degree, you are eligible to receive a grant for your internship abroad.

Information about international opportunities is shared in the Study Internationally – Teams channel

If your internship lasts at least 2 months, you can add the exchange period to your Global Talent skills. For more information on Global Talent, see the Global Talent Badge page.

Applications to Erasmus+ funded internships are submitted during application rounds (see application deadlines above). A student may have a confirmed internship placement when applying for a grant, but this is not necessary. The student can also apply for an exchange grant first and then search for a suitable internship placement. However, the internship must meet the internship criteria and be approved by the internship supervisor and the Erasmus coordinator. The student should prepare the documents required for the Erasmus+ grant at least two months before the start of the internship.

1. Plan your internship abroad

Explore potential internship placements and contact employers. See more information under the section Internship placements. The recommended duration for an internship is the minimum duration 2 months (60 days). If the internship period is longer, contact your PSP coach to create a suitable and practical plan that supports the progress of your degree.

The internship must be full-time, meaning at least 30 hours per week.

Register for the internship course in Peppi and follow the course guidelines for completing the internship. The internship supervisor is responsible for planning the content of the internship to ensure it meets the required learning objectives. The content planning follows general guidelines of internships in Humak.

2. Apply for a grant

Fill in the application form for an Erasmus+ funded internship abroad during the application period.

Applications will be processed after the deadline, and decisions will be announced by email. All approved exchanges that meet the Erasmus+ criteria will be granted an Erasmus+ grant.

Planning the internship

Students are eligible to apply for an international internship starting from their first year of studies. The internship must be a part of the degree and meet the learning objectives of the internship.

Students can participate in both study and internship exchanges multiple times. There is no limit to the number of exchanges, but a student may take part in Erasmus exchanges for a maximum of 12 months per degree level.

The minimum duration of an Erasmus+ funded internship is 2 months, and the maximum is 12 months. It is also possible to combine a study period with the internship in an international setting. The condition is that the internship is carried out under the supervision of the same host institution, and that the study and traineeship periods follow one another directly. The combined period must be at least 3 months long in total.

Please note that completing courses at a higher education institution cannot be counted as an internship.

More information on other international internship opportunities can be found on the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) website.

Students selected for exchange will receive an Erasmus+ grant for the duration of their internship. The amount of the grant is determined by the length of the exchange and the destination country.
